Easy MCQ +4 / -1 PYQ · JEE Mains 2023

Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R

Assertion A : If an electric dipole of dipole moment $30 \times 10^{-5} ~\mathrm{C} ~\mathrm{m}$ is enclosed by a closed surface, the net flux coming out of the surface will be zero.

Reason R : Electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges.

In the light of above, statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

  1. A A is true but R is false
  2. B A is false but R is true
  3. C Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
  4. D Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A Correct answer

Solution

Assertion A: If an electric dipole of dipole moment $30 \times 10^{-5} ~\mathrm{C} ~\mathrm{m}$ is enclosed by a closed surface, the net flux coming out of the surface will be zero.<br/><br/> This statement is true. According to Gauss's Law, the electric flux through a closed surface is proportional to the net charge enclosed by the surface. Since an electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges, the net charge enclosed by the surface is zero, and therefore, the net flux coming out of the surface will also be zero. <br/><br/> Reason R: Electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges.<br/><br/> This statement is also true. An electric dipole is formed by two equal and opposite charges separated by a fixed distance. <br/><br/> The reason R correctly explains the assertion A because the net charge enclosed by the surface is zero due to the presence of equal and opposite charges in the electric dipole, resulting in zero net electric flux coming out of the surface.
