Easy MCQ +4 / -1 PYQ · JEE Mains 2022

Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.

Assertion : Boric acid is a weak acid.

Reason R : Boric acid is not able to release $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ ion on its own. It receives $\mathrm{OH}^{-}$ ion from water and releases $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ ion.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

  1. A Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A. Correct answer
  2. B Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
  3. C A is correct but R is not correct.
  4. D A is not correct but R is correct.

Solution

Boric acid is a weak acid <br/><br/> $$ \mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{BO}_{3}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \rightleftharpoons\left[\mathrm{B}(\mathrm{OH})_{4}\right]^{\ominus}+\mathrm{H}^{\oplus} $$ <br/><br/> Boric acid is not able to release $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ ion on its own. It receives $\mathrm{OH}^{-}$ ion from water and releases $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ ion as shown in the above reaction. <br/><br/> Hence, Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A.
