Medium MCQ +4 / -1 PYQ · JEE Mains 2022

Given below are two statements :

Statement I : The pentavalent oxide of group-15 element, E2O5, is less acidic than trivalent oxide, E2O3, of the same element.

Statement II : The acidic character of trivalent oxide of group 15 elements, E2O3, decreases down the group.

In light of the above statements, choose most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. A Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
  2. B Both Statement I and Statement II are false.
  3. C Statement I is true, but Statement II is false.
  4. D Statement I is false, but Statement II is true. Correct answer

Solution

As +ve oxidation state increases, EN of element increases hence acidic character increases. Down the group, non-metallic character decreases, acidic character decreases.<br/><br/> Acidic character : E2O5 > E2O3<br/><br/> Down the group, acidic character of E2O3 decreases.
