Easy MCQ +4 / -1 PYQ · JEE Mains 2022

Given below are two statements : One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R

Assertion A : Permanganate titrations are not performed in presence of hydrochloric acid.

Reason R : Chlorine is formed as a consequence of oxidation of hydrochloric acid.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. A Both $\mathrm{A}$ and $\mathrm{R}$ are true and $\mathrm{R}$ is the correct explanation of $\mathrm{A}$ Correct answer
  2. B Both $\mathrm{A}$ and $\mathrm{R}$ are true but $\mathrm{R}$ is NOT the correct explanation of $\mathrm{A}$
  3. C $\mathrm{A}$ is true but $\mathrm{R}$ is false
  4. D $\mathrm{A}$ is false but $\mathrm{R}$ is true

Solution

$2 \mathrm{KMnO}_4+16 \mathrm{HCl} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{MnCl}_2+2 \mathrm{KCl}+8 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}+\mathrm{Cl}_2$<br/><br/>$\mathrm{HCl}$ is not used in the process of titration because it reacts with the $\left(\mathrm{KMnO}_{4}\right)$ that is used in the process and gets oxidized.
