Easy MCQ +4 / -1 PYQ · JEE Mains 2022

Given below are two statements.

Statement I: $\mathrm{O}_{2}, \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$, and $\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$ are weakly attracted by magnetic field and are magnetized in the same direction as magnetic field.

Statement II: $\mathrm{NaCl}$ and $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$ are weakly magnetized in opposite direction to magnetic field.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

  1. A Both Statement I and Statement II are correct. Correct answer
  2. B Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
  3. C Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
  4. D Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.

Solution

$\mathrm{O}_{2}, \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$ and $\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$ have 2,1 and 5 unpaired electrons respectively, so these are the paramagnetic species. Hence, they are attracted by magnetic field. <br/><br/> $\mathrm{NaCl}$ and $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$ are the diamagnetic species so they are repelled by the magnetic field.
